Calibrating the data logger…
This is a 9 meter resolution dataset representing the total potential incoming solar radiation under clear-sky conditions on Day of Year 172, which is the (non leap-year) summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. This data represents the total amount of incident radiation falling on a site in a single day, measured in Watt-hours per square meter. The data is output from a solar radiation model that accounts for the shading effect of topography, but assumes constant clear-sky conditions. The dataset was generated by the r.sun model in GRASS GIS version 8.2 (Mitasova et al. 2015). The model was run for each hour, and the resulting estimates of direct and diffuse radiation were summed to produce a daily product. The original elevation dataset is synthesized from 6 airborne laser scanning (LiDAR) datasets collected from August 2016 to August 2023. The data extent covers the declared forest boundary of the Grand Mesa, Uncompaghre, and Gunnison National Forests in western Colorado, USA. To produce correct topographic shading near the boundary of the dataset, the LiDAR elevation data was composited with lower-resolution (~30m) elevation data provided by the US Geological Survey as part of the National Elevation Dataset. These datasets were generated by Ian Breckheimer (ikb@rmbl.org) and Rachel Crafford at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory on behalf of the US Forest Service.
