Guidelines for the Identification, Registry and Designation of Colorado Natural Areas July, 1993 The Colorado Natural Areas Program (CNAP) was created by an act of the Colorado Legislature in 1977 and reauthorized in 1988. The Colorado Natural Areas Act, as set forth under C.R.S. 33-33-101 et seq. (1988), directs the Board of Parks and Outdoor Recreation (Parks Board) to administer the Colorado Natural Areas Program, with the advice of the Colorado Natural Areas Council (Council). Under the Act, CNAP’s mandate is to (1) identify, evaluate and protect examples of Colorado’s natural heritage; (2) maintain an inventory and registry of qualified natural areas; and. Gs establish a system of designated natural areas. A “natural area” as defined. under the Act is “a physical and biological area which either retains or has reestablished its natural character; although. it need. not be. completely undisturbed, and which typifies native vegetation and associated biological and geological . features or provides habitat for rare or endangered animal or plant species or includes geologic or other natural features of scientific or educational value". Guidelines were developed early in the history of the:Program. to ensure that the registry and designation process remains orderly and open.
