Throughout the process of formulating an economic development plan for Gunnison County, fishing consistently emerged as a high priority for future attention. The economic impact of fishing was recently verified by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Their economic impact model projected the direct fishing related expenditures in Gunnison County to be $19.3 million. Secondary expenditures bring this total to $34.3 million. Ona per capita basis, this accounts for $2,849 for each person residing in Gunnison County. It is interesting to note that the total expenditures for hunting and fishing in Gunnison County account for 3.9% of the total for Colorado. Only six counties have a higher percentage than Gunni- son. Most are large urban counties on the Front Range. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ISSUES When addressing a strategy that enhances the economic benefits of fishing, there are three primary objectives: Objective 1: To secure access to waters that have a high economic value.
