At the beginning of 1993 the Community Development office with the help of a recently completed renters housing survey, the Town Manager, the Public Works Director and Crested Butte Property Management counted the number of people in each household in Crested Butte. The total number of residents was 1154. 611 were renters and 543 were owners. Prior to projecting the population over the next 20 years the number of building permits for residential units was counted for 1988 through 1992. Each residential building permit for 1990 through 1992 was assessed to determine whether the unit would be occupied by second home owners or permanent residents, either owners or long-term renters.
