Steps below were extracted from the paper that introduces this protocol — Nonlinear phenomena in marmot alarm calls: a mechanism encoding fear? (2025), Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Record alarm vocalizations
Alarm calls were recorded using directional microphones positioned at distance from vocalizing marmots. Calls were recorded both from naturally occurring predator encounters and trap-elicited situations when marmots were handled.
Quantities: Multiple calls per individual across different risk situationsDuration: Ongoing throughout study periodConditions: During natural predator encounters and when marmots were trapped
   Equipment: directional microphones, recording equipment
2. Analyze acoustic structure
Vocalizations were analyzed for nonlinear phenomena including subharmonics, biphonation, deterministic chaos, and warbles. Entropy and goodness of pitch measures were calculated to quantify call structure and 'noisiness'.
Quantities: Analysis of hundreds of calls from multiple individualsDuration: Post-recording analysisConditions: Laboratory acoustic analysis
Equipment: acoustic analysis software, spectrogram analysis tools
