Method synopsis

Calculation of early life adversity by summing nine binary adversity measures experienced from emergence to sexual maturity, with adversity threshold set at upper quartile of population distribution.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 1 paper using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Is early life adversity associated with adult stress in a wild rodent? (2025), Ecology and Evolution. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Calculate cumulative adversity index
CAI was computed by adding nine adversity measures as binary measures (1=adversity; 0=no adversity) following Ortiz-Ross and Blumstein 2024. Adversity was determined based on the upper quartile of the total distribution for each adversity measure, with 75% of the population considered 'the norm' while the extreme 25% was considered adverse.
Quantities: Nine adversity measures per individualDuration: Calculated from early life data (emergence around 30 days after birth to sexual maturity at age 2)Conditions: Based on lifetime observational data
Equipment: observational records, NDVI satellite imagery data from USGS eMODIS database
