Method synopsis

Extension of the Lande-Arnold selection analysis using partial regression to partition selection among individual and group social phenotypes. This method scales phenotypic levels and partitions selection between nested levels of biological organization.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Multilevel selection on individual and group social behaviour in the wild (2025), Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Conduct contextual analysis
Contextual analysis was used to partition selection among levels using partial regression. Mean-variance standardized individual-level social network measures at the scale of each social group within each year (intra-group) and standardized group-level social network measures across all social groups across all 19 years (inter-group) were calculated. Group size was also mean-variance standardized on the global scale.
Quantities: Analysis included fitness measures as response variables and social traits as predictors, with separate models for each age-sex cohortDuration: Applied to entire 19-year datasetConditions: Statistical analysis phase
Equipment: statistical software for contextual analysis models

Typical Equipment

• statistical software for contextual analysis models

Output Measurements

• selection gradients
• multilevel selection coefficients
