   Aqueous phase concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were measured via water extraction by suspending 1 g of sediment in 10 mL of ultrapure water, shaking at room temperature for 2 h, centrifuging at 4,000 rpm for 10-15 min, then filtering the aqueous phase through a 0.22 μm disc filter (Fisher Scientific).
