Method synopsis

Calculation of species area of occupancy (AOO) using filtered GBIF occurrence records and standardized grid-based methods following IUCN guidelines for conservation assessment.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 2 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Rare species do not disproportionately contribute to phylogenetic diversity in a subalpine plant community (2025), American Journal of Botany. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Calculate species range sizes
Download occurrence data for each species from GBIF with <1000m coordinate uncertainty and observations made since 1950. Focus on North American observations. Calculate area of occupancy (AOO) using the R package red with 2 × 2 km resolution following IUCN resolution requirements.
Quantities: Range size calculated for 59 species total across all sitesDuration: One-time calculation for all speciesConditions: Used only North American GBIF observations with coordinate accuracy <1000m since 1950
Equipment: R software, red package, GBIF database

Typical Equipment

• R software
• red package
• GBIF database

Output Measurements

• area of occupancy (km²)
