Method synopsis

Individual plants are marked and tracked over 1-2 growing seasons to quantify herbivore damage, plant growth parameters, and reproductive output through seed counting. Environmental variables affecting herbivory likelihood are also recorded.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Impacts of assisted migration: An introduced herbivore has short-term and long-term effects on its native host plant population (2024), Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Mark study plants with identification tags
Used forestry flagging and aluminum metal tags to mark 78 L. involucrata individuals at Main site and 9 plants at Avalanche site. Each plant received unique identification for tracking across study period.
Quantities: 78 plants at Main site, 9 plants at Avalanche site, total 87 marked individualsDuration: Initial marking in 2004, plants tracked through 2005Conditions: Field marking during growing season
Equipment: forestry flagging, aluminum metal tags
2. Record herbivory evidence and plant parameters
For each marked plant, recorded number of E. gillettii larval webs present in early September 2004 as larvae were entering diapause. Also documented evidence of herbivory by other animals. In 2004, recorded plant parameters correlated with likelihood of E. gillettii herbivory including sun exposure (1=morning AM, 2=afternoon PM, 3=both AM+PM), soil wetness in first half of July and August (1=dry surface, 2=moist surface, 3=standing water), and presence/absence of P. engelmannii within 1m of plant.
Quantities: 87 total plants surveyed, larval web counts per plant, categorical ratings for sun exposure (1-3) and soil wetness (1-3)Duration: Early September 2004 for herbivory assessment, July-August 2004 for plant parametersConditions: During larval diapause period in early September, soil wetness measured during July-August growing period
   Equipment: measuring tape
