Method synopsis

Systematic collection of water samples from ponds across a hydroperiod gradient for analysis of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. Samples collected at multiple time points to capture temporal variation in nutrient storage.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 14 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — A global assessment of environmental and climate influences on wetland macroinvertebrate community structure and function (2024), Global Change Biology. The protocol was originally introduced by Pond nutrient storage across permanence and temporal gradients (2017). Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Compile global wetland macroinvertebrate dataset
Assembled macroinvertebrate community data from field surveys across 756 pristine or minimally impacted depressional wetlands spanning six continents, covering wide latitudinal, elevational, and climatic ranges. Most taxa were identified to family level, with some identified to sub-class or order level.
Quantities: 756 wetlands, 96 macroinvertebrate families, 6 continentsDuration: Not specifiedConditions: Pristine or minimally impacted depressional wetlands
Equipment: Field sampling methods detailed in Appendix S1
2. Convert abundance data to occurrence
Converted macroinvertebrate abundances to presence-absence occurrence data to remove noise from sampling technique differences and enable analysis across broad climatic gradients and geographic ranges.
Quantities: 96 families retained after removing families with fewer than five recordsDuration: Not specifiedConditions: Not specified
   Equipment: Not specified
