Method synopsis

Integration of gridMET temperature data, MODIS snowmelt timing, and PARFLOW-CLM soil moisture simulations to create multi-temporal environmental predictor datasets with quantified drought metrics.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Climate lags and genetics determine phenology in quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) (2023), New Phytologist. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Environmental data compilation
Daily maximum temperature data were obtained from the gridMET data product at 4 km resolution at daily intervals. Snowmelt timing maps at 500 m spatial resolution were obtained on an annual basis from 2013 to 2019 covering the study area based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 8-d composite snow-cover product. Obtained simulations of subsurface water transport at 1 km spatial resolution and hourly temporal resolution from 2013 to 2019 over the Upper Gunnison River Basin using the PARFLOW-Community Land Model (CLM). For each of the 2012-2019 water years, calculated the 1% quantile soil moisture value within each year as a metric of drought extremity and the maximum consecutive number of days with soil moisture below 20% as a metric of drought duration.
Quantities: 4 km resolution temperature data, 500 m resolution snowmelt data, 1 km resolution soil moisture data covering 2013-2019Duration: Daily temperature data, annual snowmelt data, hourly soil moisture data for 2012-2019Conditions: Upper Gunnison River Basin coverage
