Method synopsis

Excavation and measurement of root systems to develop allometric relationships between aboveground and belowground plant dimensions. Used to estimate below-ground spatial extent from above-ground measurements.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 1 paper using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Linking microenvironment modification to species interactions and demography in an alpine plant community (2023), Oikos. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Measure belowground spatial extent
Excavate 3-5 individuals for each of 18 species to measure maximum rooting diameters in area adjacent to field site. Calculate taxon-specific allometric scaling factor between aboveground maximum diameter and belowground maximum diameter using fitted linear regression models.
Quantities: 3-5 individuals per species for 18 speciesDuration: Conducted in 2015 and 2016Conditions: Area adjacent to main field site
Equipment: excavation tools for root measurement

Typical Equipment

• excavation tools

Output Measurements

• root system diameter
