Method synopsis

Occupancy models fitted to estimate species detectability and habitat use while correcting for imperfect detection, using human activity and environmental covariates. Model selection performed using AIC criteria.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Differential response of three large mammal species to human recreation in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA (2023), Frontiers in Conservation Science. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Daily activity quantification
Calculated number of captures of each human activity per day and used these daily captures as predictor variables in detection formulas. Counted individuals each time they pass in front of a camera, which represents the amount of activity at the site rather than the number of unique individuals. All wildlife sightings were identified to species using all available clues within photo sequences, including body size, body features, color patterns, and fur textures.
Quantities: Daily counts of pedestrians, bikers, and motorized vehicles per cameraDuration: Daily basis throughout study periodConditions: Captures counted for each day of camera operation
   Equipment: Photo identification software

Typical Equipment

• R statistical software
• unmarked package

Output Measurements

• occupancy probability
• detection probability
• covariate effects
