Method synopsis

Individual animals are uniquely marked and tracked through capture-recapture over multiple decades to estimate survival, reproduction, and productivity parameters. This generates individual life histories used to quantify temporal correlations among demographic traits.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Individual life histories: neither slow nor fast, just diverse (2023), Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Calculate life-history traits from demographic data
For each individual of each species, calculated four life-history traits: (i) age at first reproduction (years), (ii) adult lifespan (years), (iii) fecundity (number of independent offspring produced per year), and (iv) breeding frequency (number of breeding events per year). Conducted strict filtering of data to ensure complete records were available for each species.
Quantities: 17 species total (10 bird species and 7 mammal species), with complete individual records varying by speciesDuration: Based on long-term demographic monitoring datasets spanning multiple years per speciesConditions: Used existing demographic datasets from established long-term monitoring programs
   Equipment: demographic monitoring databases
