Method synopsis

Systematic measurement of antipredator escape behavior by approaching focal individuals at standardized speed and recording distances at key behavioral response points. Includes observation of social context and environmental variables.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 30 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Climatic variation and risk assessment in a highly seasonal mammal (2025), Current Zoology. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Flight initiation distance measurement
Used standardized protocol where researcher approached marmots not actively watching the researcher at rate of 0.5 m/s. Did not conduct FID trials when raining, snowing, or excessively windy (> Beaufort scale 3). Marked researcher's starting location by dropping flag, then dropped additional flags at location where marmot became alert and where marmot initiated flight. Continued walking to marmot's initial location and dropped fourth flag.
Quantities: 1584 total FID observations from 545 individuals across 17 years (2003-2022, no observations in 2006-2007)Duration: Individual trials lasted duration of approach until marmot fledConditions: No rain, snow, or excessive wind (≤ Beaufort scale 3)
Equipment: flags for marking positions, meter tape for distance measurement
2. Distance and behavioral measurements
Using meter tape, measured to nearest 0.01 m: starting distance (SD; distance between animal and observer's starting point), alert distance (AD; distance between observer and animal when animal oriented toward observer), flight initiation distance (FID; distance at which animal initiated flight), and distance from nearest burrow. Also recorded substrate, vegetation level, behavior at start, slope of approach and flight, and escape method.
Quantities: 4 distance measurements per FID trial to nearest 0.01 m precisionDuration: Measurements taken immediately after each FID trialConditions: Measured in field immediately following each trial
   Equipment: meter tape
