Method synopsis

Standardized sampling of large and small benthic invertebrates using D-net sweeps and benthic cores, with zooplankton sampling using mesh nets. Animals identified to species or family level for community composition analysis.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Animal-Driven Nutrient Supply Declines Relative to Ecosystem Nutrient Demand Along a Pond Hydroperiod Gradient (2021), Ecosystems. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Benthic invertebrate sampling
Collected large benthic invertebrates using single 0.33 m² benthic D-net sweeps at north, east, south and west sides of each pond on July 19, 2018. Sampled small benthic invertebrates using 0.02 m² benthic core. Identified all individuals to species-level (or family level for caddisflies, Gerridae, Hydrophilidae, Veliidae). Estimated average zooplankton density by pooling pond-level samples collected with 80-μm mesh net and 2.2 L Van-Dorn following established methods for this system.
Quantities: 4 benthic sweeps per pond (12 ponds = 48 total sweeps), 0.02 m² core samples, 80-μm mesh net samplesDuration: Single sampling date: July 19, 2018Conditions: Summer sampling during peak activity period
   Equipment: 0.33 m² benthic D-net, 0.02 m² benthic core, 80-μm mesh net, 2.2 L Van-Dorn sampler

Typical Equipment

• 0.33 m² benthic D-net
• 0.02 m² benthic core
• 80-μm mesh net
• 2.2 L Van-Dorn sampler

Output Measurements

• species abundance
• community composition
• invertebrate density
