Method synopsis

Paired experimental design comparing floral development and longevity between plants receiving daily road dust applications versus undusted controls, with detailed tracking of flower developmental stages.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Predispersal Seed Predation Obscures the Detrimental Effect of Dust on Wildflower Reproduction (2021), International Journal of Plant Sciences. The protocol was originally introduced by Does road dust affect reproduction of Delphinium nelsonii and Ipomopsis aggregata (2008). Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Dust collection and preparation
Obtained dust from a section of road north of RMBL that has never been treated with magnesium chloride. Soil was extracted and sieved through a number 35 US standard soil sieve (0.5 mm mesh size) to produce fine powder.
Quantities: Sufficient dust powder for daily applications throughout flowering seasonsDuration: Prior to each flowering seasonConditions: Road dust collection from untreated unpaved road
Equipment: number 35 US standard soil sieve (0.5 mm mesh), collection containers
2. Dust treatment application
Applied dust to treatment plants by hand dusting on July 5, 15, and June 18 in 2016, 2017, and 2018 respectively, then continued every 1-2 days except during periods of rainfall until plants ceased flowering. Control plants were covered with a plastic bag to shield them during dusting of nearby plants.
Quantities: 10-15 pumps of air from clean empty duster per applicationDuration: Daily applications (every 1-2 days) throughout entire flowering seasonConditions: Applications suspended during rainfall periods
Equipment: clean empty duster for air application, plastic bags for shielding control plants
