Method synopsis

Aqueous CO2 concentrations determined by headspace equilibration in glass bottles followed by IRGA analysis of extracted headspace gas with correction factors applied.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 8 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Improving predictions of stream CO2 concentrations and fluxes using a stream network model: A case study in the East River watershed, CO, USA (2021), Global Biogeochemical Cycles. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Direct pCO2 measurement
Stream water samples were prepared by equilibrating 80 ml of stream water with 60 ml of atmosphere in a gas-tight syringe, shaken vigorously for 60 seconds before direct injection into the analyzer. Atmospheric pCO2 corrections were applied using measured values of 400 ppm.
Quantities: Direct pCO2 measurements at 151 locationsDuration: 60 seconds equilibration time per sampleConditions: Ambient atmospheric pCO2 measurements ranged from 400 to 408 ppm
Equipment: EGM-5 Portable CO2 Infra-Red Gas Analyzer (PP Systems), gas-tight syringes
