Video recording of puzzle box interactions
Two Browning Strike Force HD or Browning Spec Ops FHD cameras placed approximately 2.5 m from box and aimed at opposite corners of platform to capture activity from different perspectives. Cameras movement activated and set to record 2-min videos with 5-s recovery time. Trial started when individual stepped onto plywood platform with at least one paw and considered 'interacting' when they first made physical contact with box. Trial ended when individual no longer had physical contact with plywood or box for over 5 s. Individual engaged in 1 to 48 trials with average visit lasting 80.9 s.
Quantities: 2 cameras per box, 2.5 m distance, 2-min videos, 5-s recovery time, 1-48 trials per individual, average 80.9 s visit durationDuration: Continuous recording during box deployment periodsConditions: Motion-activated recording throughout day
Equipment: Browning Strike Force HD cameras, Browning Spec Ops FHD cameras
Behavioral trait extraction from videos
Used JWatcher 1.0 to extract behavioral traits from video recordings. Recorded onset of all behaviors individual engaged in from first physical contact with plywood platform until end of trial. Calculated persistence as proportion of time in sight that focal marmot spent interacting with box during trial. Behavioral selectivity calculated as sum of proportion of time devoted to effective behaviors. Behavioral diversity calculated with Shannon index for each individual across each trial. For neophobia, measured latency to touch box from stepping onto platform for first trial of each day individual interacted with box.
Quantities: Behavioral data extracted for all trials, measured as proportions of time and latency in secondsDuration: Post-field video analysis using specialized softwareConditions: Systematic coding of all recorded behaviors
