Method synopsis

Extraction of climatic and vegetation variables from online databases including WorldClim2 for temperature and precipitation data and MODIS for vegetation indices. Includes calculation of derived metrics like actual evapotranspiration.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Testing trade-offs and the dominance–impoverishment rule among ant communities (2020), Journal of Biogeography. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Extract environmental variables
Four environmental variables were extracted from online databases: Mean annual temperature (MAT) and annual precipitation (AP) from 1970-2000 average WorldClim2 dataset at 30 arc seconds resolution, monthly normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from MODIS data, and actual evapotranspiration (AET) using Turc's formula.
Quantities: 4 environmental variables, 30 arc second resolution climate data, monthly NDVI dataDuration: Post-field GIS analysisConditions: Computer-based data extraction
Equipment: WorldClim2 dataset, MODIS NDVI data, GIS software

Typical Equipment

• WorldClim2 dataset
• MODIS NDVI data
• GIS software

Output Measurements

• mean annual temperature
• annual precipitation
• NDVI
• actual evapotranspiration
