Method synopsis

Decomposition of total seed production into four multiplicative components: flower number, fruit set, seed set, and seed escape from predation. Allows identification of which reproductive stages are most sensitive to environmental variation.

Steps below were extracted from the paper that introduces this protocol — Early snowmelt projected to cause population decline in a subalpine plant (2019), PNAS. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Comprehensive seed collection and analysis
Seeds collected from fruiting plants and analyzed for four multiplicative components: number of flowers produced, proportion of flowers that set fruit and seeds per fruit, proportion of fruits that were undamaged, and seeds per undamaged fruit. Seeds per plant calculated as product of these components.
Quantities: Seeds collected from all reproductive plants annually, analyzed for 4 separate componentsDuration: Annual collection during fruiting season over 15 yearsConditions: Post-flowering, during seed maturation and before natural dispersal
Equipment: collection containers, seed counting materials

Typical Equipment

• collection containers
• seed counting materials

Output Measurements

• flowers per plant
• fruits per flower
• seeds per fruit
• undamaged seeds per plant
• total seeds per plant
