Method synopsis

Plant cover measured using 1 m² quadrats divided into 1 dm² cells, counting filled cells to nearest 0.25 dm². Height measured to maximum plant extension. Volume calculated as cover × height/10.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Chronic, low-level nitrogen deposition enhances abundances of ant-protected herbivores inhabiting an imperiled foundation species (2021), Acta Oecologica. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Measure sagebrush cover
Sagebrush cover was measured by overlaying a 1 m² quadrat divided into 1 dm² cells with string placed every 10 cm. Percent cover was estimated as the number of dm² cells filled by sagebrush (to the nearest ¼ cell, or 0.25%) when viewed from above.
Quantities: 1 m² quadrat divided into 1 dm² cells, measurements to nearest 0.25%Duration: Measured during survey periodsConditions: Viewed from above for consistent estimation
Equipment: 1 m² quadrat with string grid at 10 cm intervals

Typical Equipment

• 1 m² quadrat divided into 1 dm² cells
• string spaced every 10 cm
• measuring device for height

Output Measurements

• plant cover (dm²)
• plant height (cm)
• plant volume (dm³)
