Method synopsis

Comprehensive search of Web of Science databases for manipulative experiments on terrestrial carbon cycling responses to global change drivers, followed by systematic screening, data extraction, and quantitative synthesis using random-effects meta-analysis models.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 3 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — A meta-analysis of 1,119 manipulative experiments on terrestrial carbon-cycling responses to global change (2019), Nature Ecology & Evolutiion. The protocol was originally introduced by Temperature response of soil respiration largely unaltered with experimental warming (2016), Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Database search and paper screening
Searched Web of Science databases from January 1900 to December 31, 2016 using keywords including global change, climate change, free-air carbon dioxide enrichment, elevated atmospheric CO2, warming, elevated temperature, changing precipitation, increased/decreased precipitation, nitrogen deposition, and nitrogen application. Screened 107,920 publications by reading titles and abstracts.
Quantities: 107,920 publications initially identified, screened down to 2,230 publicationsDuration: Database search covered 116 years of published literatureConditions: Peer-reviewed publications only, terrestrial ecosystems only
Equipment: Web of Science database, multiple citation databases including WoS Core Collection, Inspec, KCI-Korean Journal Database, BIOSIS Previews, Derwent Innovations Index, Russian Science Citation Index, Data Citation Index, Chinese Science Citation Database, MEDLINE, SciELO Citation Index
2. Study selection and inclusion criteria application
Selected studies that reported results of manipulative experiments conducted in outdoor environment with both control and treatment groups, each group having at least three plots or particles, treatment groups manipulated to simulate global change drivers, experiments conducted in terrestrial ecosystems. Excluded aquatic and agricultural ecosystems, laboratory incubation studies.
Quantities: 2,230 publications selected from initial screen, resulting in 850 single-factor experiments and 269 multi-factor experiments
