Method synopsis

High-frame-rate video recording and motion tracking of wild hummingbird aerial courtship displays to quantify dive kinematics and timing. Uses GoPro cameras at 120 fps to capture rapid courtship behaviors.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Synchronization of speed, sound and iridescent color in a hummingbird aerial courtship dive (2018), Nature Communications. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Video recording of courtship dives
Recorded videos of broad-tailed hummingbird courtship dives using GoPro cameras. Videos were filmed at a resolution of 1280×960 pixels at 120 frames per second. Camera was positioned to capture males performing dives over females at a feeder location.
Quantities: 48 dives from 17 individual males were recorded and analyzedDuration: Multiple recording sessions during breeding seasonConditions: Field conditions at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, Colorado during hummingbird breeding season
   Equipment: GoPro cameras
2. Motion tracking and trajectory analysis
Applied motion tracking to video recordings to extract dive trajectories, speeds, and timing of key events. Tracked male position throughout dive and calculated velocity, acceleration, and trajectory parameters. Used manual tracking with software assistance to ensure accuracy.
Quantities: Full trajectory tracking for 48 dives with position measurements at 120 HzDuration: Post-processing analysis of recorded videosConditions: Laboratory analysis of field-recorded video data
Equipment: motion tracking software, video analysis tools
