Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Climate Warming Drives Local Extinction: Evidence from Observation and Experimentation (2018), ScienceAdvances. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Experimental seed introduction
Experimentally introduced A. septentrionalis seeds into Warming Meadow to test emergence and early life-stage survival. Randomly selected four planting locations within each plot, clipped aboveground vegetation, removed large rocks, and sank 15-cm x 15-cm plastic grids 1 cm into soil. Adhered two seeds from each lineage to wooden toothpicks using water-soluble glue for precise placement.
Quantities: 4 planting locations per plot, 1520 total seeds planted (19 lineages × 10 plots × 4 blocks × 2 seeds), 15-cm × 15-cm plastic gridsDuration: Planting in July 2014, monitoring through fall 2015Conditions: Mid-July planting before monsoonal moisture arrival
Equipment: 15-cm × 15-cm plastic grids, wooden toothpicks, water-soluble glue
2. Monitor seed emergence and survival
Conducted weekly surveys during fall emergence period (August to September) to follow performance of introduced seeds. Scored each seed for emergence, and once seedling emerged, recorded distance to planted toothpick. Followed seedlings until one died or both reached four-leaf stage. Conducted final census in fall 2015.
Quantities: Weekly surveys of all 1520 planted seeds, individual tracking until 4-leaf stageDuration: Weekly surveys August-September 2014, final census fall 2015Conditions: Fall germination period, spring growing season monitoring
Equipment: measuring tools for distance to toothpick, individual markers

Typical Equipment

• 15-cm × 15-cm plastic grids
• wooden toothpicks
• water-soluble glue

Output Measurements
