Method synopsis

Quantitative analysis of the relationship between sapsucker damage patterns on aspen trees and proximity to willow habitat, using distance measurements and damage assessment.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 4 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Diversification of Type VI Secretion System Toxins Reveals Ancient Antagonism among Bee Gut Microbes (2017), mBio. The protocol was originally introduced by Red-naped Sapsucker nest tree selection and effects on the willow breeding bird community (2004). Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Measure sapsucker damage and habitat relationships
Sapsucker damage on aspen trees was measured and recorded. Distance between willow and aspen locations was measured to assess habitat proximity relationships. Damage was quantified as percent aspen bearing sapsucker damage.
Quantities: Measurements across all 6 study sites with varying distances from willow to aspenDuration: Conducted during the study period alongside breeding surveysConditions: Measurements taken in suitable sapsucker habitat areas
Equipment: distance measuring equipment, damage assessment tools

Typical Equipment

• distance measuring equipment
• damage assessment tools

Output Measurements

• percent aspen damage
• willow-aspen distance
• correlation coefficients
