Method synopsis

Quantitative measurement of dust particle deposition rates using filter paper disks placed at varying distances from unpaved roads, with microscopic particle counting at standardized sampling points.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 4 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Effects of road dust on the pollination and reproduction of wildflowers (2017), International Journal of Plant Sciences. The protocol was originally introduced by Does road dust affect reproduction of Delphinium nelsonii and Ipomopsis aggregata (2008). Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Establish dust measurement transects
Place filter-paper disks (Qualitative, 9 cm diameter) on soil surface along transects running at right angles from road verges at distances of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 m from the road. Use 5-10 haphazardly chosen points on each disk. Fasten disks to soil using small steel nails.
Quantities: 5-10 points per disk, transects at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 m distancesDuration: Left in place for 1-4 rain-free daysConditions: Rain-free periods, dust-free periods relatively rare during summer months in western Colorado
Equipment: filter-paper disks (Qualitative, 9 cm diameter), small steel nails
2. Count dust particles on filter disks
Sample dust particles within an area of 0.096 mm² at each of 5-10 haphazardly chosen points on each disk using a dissecting microscope at ×50 magnification. Count particles in each area and calculate relative deposition rates.
Quantities: 0.096 mm² sampling area per point, 5-10 points per diskDuration: Not specifiedConditions: Laboratory conditions
 Equipment: dissecting microscope, ×50 magnification
