Method synopsis

Photographic analysis using ImageJ software with ellipsis tool to quantify percent vegetation coverage around each sampling point as a fraction of total photographed area.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 2 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Aspen (<i>Populus tremuloides</i>) stand dynamics and understory plant community changes over 46 years near Crested Butte, Colorado, USA (2014), Forest Ecology and Management. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Photograph canopy
Took a digital hemispheric photo at the center of each plot at a height of 1.37 m. Photos were taken during uniformly cloudy or twilight conditions to avoid direct sunlight.
Quantities: 1 photo per plot center, 152 photos total, at 1.37 m heightDuration: Not specifiedConditions: Uniformly cloudy or twilight conditions to avoid direct sunlight
   Equipment: digital camera
2. Analyze canopy photos
Analyzed canopy photos with ImageJ software using manually adjusted contrast threshold to create binary, black-and-white images. Calculated percentage of canopy foliar cover from these processed images.
Quantities: 152 photos processedDuration: Not specifiedConditions: Laboratory analysis
   Equipment: ImageJ software
