Method synopsis

PERMANOVA and PCoA analyses based on Bray-Curtis dissimilarity to test for differences in ant community composition and visualize community structure changes through time and across treatments.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 1 paper using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Changes in ant community composition caused by 20 years of experimental warming vs.13 years of natural climate shift (2014), Ecosphere. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Quantify ant abundance and occurrence
Two measures of ant species abundance were calculated: log transformation of average numbers of workers captured per pitfall trap (abundance), and proportion of pitfall traps in which each species was captured (occurrence)
Quantities: Data calculated for all captured specimens across all trapsDuration: Post-sampling data processingConditions: Laboratory data processing
   Equipment: computers for data analysis

Typical Equipment

• JMP 8.0 software
• PRIMER v6 software

Output Measurements

• community dissimilarity
• ordination axes
• species contributions
