Method synopsis

Mathematical method for calculating relative dominance ranks from pairwise interaction outcomes that is tolerant of missing data and accounts for group size variation.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 3 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Early play may predict later dominance relationships in yellow-bellied marmots (<i>Marmota flaviventris</i>) (2013), Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Calculate dominance ranks
Used the Clutton-Brock index which is particularly tolerant of missing pairwise interactions and weighs wins highly. For each marmot in a colony-year, calculated index based on number of marmots that focal marmot beat (B) plus total number which they lost to, excluding the subject (ΣJ), divided by (L + ΣJ + 1). Generated pairwise matrices of 'wins and losses' and calculated two separate measures of dominance for play and agonistic interactions.
Quantities: 110 colony-year matrices total, 64 matrices with play data, 56 matrices with agonistic dataDuration: Post-processing after field seasonsConditions: Laboratory data analysis
   Equipment: statistical software
