Method synopsis

Territory delineation by following singing males and recording GPS coordinates of singing locations to map territory boundaries and calculate area and perimeter.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Breeding bird density does not drive vocal individuality (2012), Current Zoology. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Establish survey area and approach birds
Researchers walked around the town site of RMBL and surrounding area in a 6 km section of the upper East River valley, walking up to 400 m away from the road that bisects it. Individual birds were approached and observed during singing.
Quantities: 6 km section surveyed, up to 400 m from roadDuration: Not specified per approachConditions: No recordings during rain or wind to ensure highest signal to noise ratio
Equipment: Sennheiser MZW 816 microphone, ME-67 microphone, Marantz Professional Solid State Recorder PMD660
2. Record bird vocalizations
Common songs were recorded using directional microphones at varying distances from birds. Aimed to record common songs from ten males of each species, with at least 20 good-quality songs from each subject male. Recordings were made only when observers could be certain recordings from different birds.
Quantities: Target of 10 males per species, at least 20 songs per male, distance 5-30m from birdDuration: Multiple recording sessions across breeding seasons 2009-2011Conditions: No rain or wind conditions, breeding season timing
Equipment: Sennheiser MZW 816 microphone, Sennheiser ME-67 microphone, Marantz Professional Solid State Recorder PMD660, D&M Professional Itasca Illinois
