Method synopsis

Statistical analysis of flower constancy using Bateman's index and modified Cindex with randomization tests to determine whether butterflies exhibit constant foraging behavior.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 2 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Butterflies show flower colour preferences but not constancy in foraging at four plant species (2011), Ecological Entomology. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Record visit sequences for constancy analysis
Recorded the particular sequence of visits in each array and calculated frequencies of transitions among flower types. Generated sequences of flower visit transitions of length equal to observed number, with each visit assigned to species based on null probability
Quantities: All flight transitions recorded, 200 null hypothesis values generated for each constancy testDuration: Continuous during observation periodsConditions: During all array observations
   Equipment: data recording materials

Output Measurements

• constancy index
• transition frequencies
