Method synopsis

Visual counting method for arthropods on sagebrush plants involving systematic counting of mobile species first (to avoid double-counting) followed by sedentary species. Targets mutualistic and non-mutualistic herbivores and predators.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Chronic, low-level nitrogen deposition enhances abundances of ant-protected herbivores inhabiting an imperiled foundation species (2021), Acta Oecologica. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Establish survey quadrats
Within each plot, two 1 m² quadrats were established by blindly tossing a marker, within which plant and arthropod surveys were conducted.
Quantities: 2 quadrats per plot, 1 m² each, total of 72 quadrats across 36 plotsDuration: Initial establishment for long-term monitoringConditions: Random placement within each plot
Equipment: marker, 1 m² quadrat frames
2. Conduct arthropod surveys
Surveys involved counting ants and other highly mobile arthropods on all aboveground sagebrush surfaces, moving quickly across plants to avoid double-counting, then by counting less mobile and sedentary species. Surveys were initially assessed for all plots in August 2013, then repeated for 19 plots on July 24-25, 2018.
Quantities: All plots surveyed in 2013, 19 plots surveyed in 2018Duration: Surveys conducted in August 2013 and July 24-25, 2018Conditions: Moving quickly to avoid double-counting mobile species
   Equipment: counting sheets

Typical Equipment
