Method synopsis

Larval energetic reserves were manipulated by removing cases just prior to pupation, forcing experimental individuals to rebuild cases while controls could re-enter existing cases.

Procedure as described in the canonical source

Steps below were extracted from the paper that introduces this protocol — Effects of larval energetic resources on life history and adult allocation patterns in a caddisfly (Trichoptera: Phryganeidae) (2007), Ecological Entomology. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Collect larval specimens
In July 2001, 100 fifth (final) instar larvae were collected and each head capsule width (size) measured. Each larva was randomly assigned to one of two treatments: case removal or control. Each of the 50 case-removal individuals had their larval case removed and were placed in a 16 oz. plastic cup for 24 h that contained pond water and case-building material (usually fresh and decomposed Carex and Isoctes plants).
Quantities: 100 fifth instar larvae total, 50 per treatment groupDuration: 24 hours for case building periodConditions: July 2001 collection period
Equipment: 16 oz. plastic cups, pond water, Carex plants, Isoctes plants
2. Establish individual rearing chambers
All individuals were placed in individual rearing chambers in their native pond. Chambers were constructed from 10 cm window screen (20 cm × 20 cm) rolled into a tube and held together by duct tape and cable ties. Each chamber was then attached to Styrofoam insulation and floated on the surface of the pond such that the top half of each chamber was above the water line to allow the terrestrial adult to emerge.
Quantities: 100 individual chambers (20 cm × 20 cm each), 10 cm window screenDuration: Until adult emergenceConditions: Floating on pond surface with half above water line
Equipment: 10 cm window screen, duct tape, cable ties, Styrofoam insulation
