Method synopsis

Color-marking of individual males with permanent markers and subsequent recapture to estimate survival and return rates to mating swarms.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Swarming and mating behavior of a mayfly Baetis bicaudatus suggest stabilizing selection for male body size (2002), Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Mark-recapture longevity study
Males were marked and recaptured during 8-day periods (22-26 July and 5-9 August) using colored Sharpie Brand permanent markers with different colors on different days to estimate days that marked males swarmed, then captured with a sweep net while swarming and marked on one wing with a Sharpie Brand permanent marker and immediately released.
Quantities: Two 5-day periods, multiple males marked dailyDuration: 5-day marking periods repeated twiceConditions: Lower-elevation meadow site during swarming periods
Equipment: sweep net, Sharpie Brand permanent markers, colored markers

Typical Equipment

• sweep net
• Sharpie Brand permanent markers
• colored markers

Output Measurements

• individual longevity
• return probability
• survival rates
