Method synopsis

Simultaneous measurement of oxygen consumption, body temperature, and conductance in marmots entering torpor to determine mechanisms of metabolic depression. Q10 analysis used to distinguish active metabolic inhibition from passive temperature effects.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Holarctic marmots as a factor of biodiversity (2002). Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Measure oxygen consumption during torpor entry
Oxygen consumption was measured in marmots as they entered torpor, with measurements taken before and during the decline in body temperature to establish temporal relationships between metabolic rate and temperature changes.
Quantities: 15 marmots totalDuration: Throughout torpor entry periodConditions: During natural torpor entry
   Equipment: oxygen consumption measurement system
2. Monitor body temperature changes
Body temperature was continuously monitored to track the timing of temperature decline relative to changes in oxygen consumption and establish the temporal sequence of physiological changes during torpor entry.
Quantities: All 15 subjects monitoredDuration: Throughout torpor entryConditions: During torpor entry period
   Equipment: temperature monitoring system
3. Measure conductance
Conductance measurements were taken to assess thermal conductance changes and determine whether these could account for observed metabolic changes during torpor entry.
Quantities: Measured in all subjectsDuration: During study periodConditions: During torpor entry
