Method synopsis

Digital signal processing technique using normalized spectrogram correlations to quantify acoustic signal degradation by comparing two-dimensional spectrograms between reference and experimental distances. Uses 256-point FFT with Hamming window to generate spectrograms for correlation analysis.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — A test of the acoustic adaptation hypothesis in four species of marmots (1998), Animal Behavior. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Spectrogram correlation analysis
Calculated normalized spectrogram correlations between sounds recorded at reference distance of 1m and experimental distances of 10, 20, 30, and 40m. Generated 'boxy' sound spectrograms using 256-point short-time Fourier transformation (50% overlap). Applied Hamming window and -110 dB clipping level. Normalized spectrogram correlation compares overall two-dimensional shape of the spectrograms but ignores amplitude differences between the two sounds being compared.
Quantities: 256-point Fourier transformation with 50% overlap, -110 dB clipping level, correlations calculated for 4 experimental distancesDuration: Analysis conducted on all digitized recordingsConditions: Standardized digital signal processing parameters
Equipment: Canary 1.2 software (Charif et al. 1995), 256-point FFT analysis
