Method synopsis

Controlled trials placing two males of different sizes with one female in observation arenas to determine effects of male body size on reproductive success.

Procedure as described in the canonical source

Steps below were extracted from the paper that introduces this protocol — Effects of size at metamorphosis on stonefly fecundity, longevity, and reproductive success (1998), Oecologia. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Set up male reproductive success arenas
One large (mean ± SE = 85.0 mg ± 2.73) and one small (53.0 mg ± 1.42) male of the same age placed in observation arena (45 × 22 × 25 cm) with a mesh top and 1-day-old female. Arena contained stream rocks, woody debris and willow twigs as substrate.
Quantities: 15 trials with 2 males and 1 female per trialDuration: From day emerged until late evening (2000-2100 hours)Conditions: Arenas outdoors under streamside tarp at night using red light
Equipment: observation arena (45 × 22 × 25 cm), mesh top, stream rocks, woody debris, willow twigs, red light

Typical Equipment

• observation arena (45 × 22 × 25 cm)
• mesh top
• red light

Output Measurements

• mating success
• male competition outcomes
