Method synopsis

Systematic exclusion of individual biogeochemical mechanisms to quantify their relative contributions to solute exports and carbon partitioning. Compares scenarios with and without specific processes while maintaining all other model components.

Steps below were extracted from the paper that introduces this protocol — Model-based interpretation of solute exports and carbon partitioning during shale weathering in a mountainous hillslope (2026), Water Resources Research. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Collect pore water and gas samples
Collect pore water and gas samples at multiple depths on a weekly to monthly basis using nested suction lysimeters installed in the wells at depths ranging from 0.2 to 7.8 m, with vertical spacing increasing with depth (Δz = 0.2 m within upper 1 m, 0.7 m ≤ Δz ≤ 3.58 m below 1 m)
Quantities: Multiple depths per well, 0.2 to 7.8 m depth range, variable vertical spacingDuration: Weekly to monthly sampling from November 2016 to October 2021, with higher frequency spring to late summerConditions: Higher sampling frequency from spring to late summer to capture snowmelt impact
Equipment: nested suction lysimeters, gas samplers
