Method synopsis

Radiocarbon-based modeling of soil organic carbon transit times and system ages using three parallel pools (LF, OF, HF) with different turnover rates and petrogenic carbon corrections.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Quantifying the effect of petrogenic carbon on SOC turnover for two Rocky Mountain soils: when are petrogenic carbon corrections required? (2025), Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Radiocarbon analysis
Air-dried bulk soils, density fractions, and incubation CO2 completed at Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometry facility at University of California, Irvine in 2021. Bulk soils and HF acid-leached to remove inorganic C prior to combustion to CO2. CO2 purified and converted to graphite targets for 14C analysis following standard Keck-AMS protocols.
Quantities: All soil fractions and CO2 samples analyzedDuration: 2021 analysis periodConditions: Standard Keck-AMS laboratory conditions
Equipment: Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (KECK-AMS)

Typical Equipment

• SoilR package

Output Measurements
