1. Hair sample collection from wolves
   Twenty-two hair samples were collected from healthy captive gray wolves at the California Wolf Center. Hair was collected from five specific sampling areas based on best areas to detect Demodex mites in dog skin: face, dorsum, lumbar, abdomen and feet. In three wolves, hair was also plucked from injury/scab areas. Hair was plucked in the direction of growth to include the hair bulb (root) for DNA extraction.

2. Hair sample collection from marmots
   Sixteen hair samples were plucked from the rumps of healthy wild yellow-bellied marmots living in the East River Valley around the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gunnison County, Colorado. Six sites were sampled corresponding to six different colonies. All sampled individuals appeared healthy at time of capture, with no known diseases in the population and no abnormalities observed.
