Method synopsis

A graphical framework that plots growth rate and predation rate as functions of defensive trait change to predict optimal trait expression and resulting nonconsumptive effects magnitude. The model decomposes fitness into growth and predation components to visualize trade-offs.

Procedure as described in the canonical source

Steps below were extracted from the paper that introduces this protocol — Costs of predator-induced phenotypic plasticity: A graphical model for predicting the contribution of non-consumptive and consumptive effects of predators on prey (2013), Oecologia. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Develop graphical framework
Created a graphical model plotting fitness components (growth rate and predation rate) as functions of trait change magnitude. Fitness was defined as the difference between growth rate and predation rate. Growth rate curves were represented with solid lines, predation rate curves with dashed lines.
Quantities: Two fitness components plotted across trait change values from 0 to 1.0Duration: Not specifiedConditions: Theoretical modeling exercise
2. Examine linear scenarios
Analyzed cases where both growth rate and predation rate decrease linearly with increasing trait change. Systematically varied the steepness of growth and predation curves to represent different environmental conditions.
Quantities: Multiple curve combinations shown in 6 panels (Figure 1a-f)Duration: Not specifiedConditions: Linear relationships between trait change and fitness components
3. Examine nonlinear scenarios
Analyzed cases with linear decrease in growth rate but accelerating (nonlinear) decrease in predation rates with trait change. Used these to represent more realistic biological systems where predation risk reduction may be nonlinear.
Quantities: Multiple curve combinations shown in 6 panels (Figure 2a-f)Duration: Not specifiedConditions: Linear growth curves with nonlinear predation curves
