Method synopsis

Quantification of vocal individuality using principal component analysis followed by ANOVA and Beecher's information statistic calculation to measure inter-individual variation relative to intra-individual variation.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 2 papers using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Breeding bird density does not drive vocal individuality (2012), Current Zoology. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Acoustic analysis of recordings
Sound files analyzed using Praat sound analysis software. Recordings normalized to 95% peak amplitude. Preliminary examination of spectrograms using Fourier transformed spectrograms with specific parameters. Multiple acoustic variables measured for each species including duration, frequency measures, phrase characteristics.
Quantities: 0-10 kHz frequency range, spectrogram window length 0.005s, dynamic range 40 dB, time steps 1000, frequency steps 250Duration: Not specifiedConditions: Laboratory conditions
Equipment: Praat sound analysis software, Computer workstation
2. Statistical analysis and calculation of Beecher's information statistic
Principal component analysis in SPSS 20 to reduce data to uncorrelated factors. ANOVA model fitted blocking by individual to each factor, retaining F-values that were significant (P < 0.05). F-values used to calculate Beecher information statistic for each species. Point count data analyzed in DISTANCE 6.0 release 2 using hazard rate, half-normal key and uniform key models.
Quantities: MINEIGEN = 0.01, ITERATE = 25, NOROTATE, METHOD = CORRELATION parameters for PCADuration: Not specifiedConditions: Laboratory analysis conditions
Equipment: SPSS 20 software, DISTANCE 6.0 release 2 software
