Method synopsis

Systematic mapping of glacial landforms using aerial photographs corrected for distortion and plotted on controlled base maps. Used to identify and map terminal moraines, glacial striae, and associated glacial features.

Synthesized from method descriptions across 1 paper using this protocol.

Procedure from a recent peer-reviewed implementation

Steps below were extracted from the most recent peer-reviewed implementation of this protocol in the corpus — Glacial advances and soil development, Grand Mesa, Colorado (1954), American Journal of Science. Implementations in other papers (listed below) may differ.

1. Aerial photograph mapping
All field work was conducted using aerial photographs that were corrected for distortion when plotted on controlled base maps to accurately map glacial features across Grand Mesa
Quantities: Covered 44 square miles of mesa areaDuration: Field work conducted in 1947 and 1948Conditions: Work done on the Grand Mesa plateau at elevations above 10,300 feet
Equipment: aerial photographs, controlled base maps
2. Glacial feature identification and mapping
Identified and mapped terminal moraines, glacial striae, roches moutonnées, kettles, lakes, outwash deposits, and glacial markings across the mesa surface
Quantities: Three distinct terminal moraines mapped, with first moraine at 10,500 feet elevation, second moraine 1.25 miles east at 75 feet higher elevationDuration: Conducted during 1947-1948 field seasonsConditions: Mesa top elevation ranges from 10,300 feet at Lands End to near 11,000 feet at highest east point
   Equipment: aerial photographs

Typical Equipment

• aerial photographs
• controlled base maps

Output Measurements

• moraine locations
• glacial feature distributions
• topographic relationships
