Numerous factors, including climate, resource availability, and habitat diversity, act as determinants of global species diversity. I collected baseline species richness data at three sites along an elevation gradient. Discovery curves indicated that I recorded all species at a site. Interestingly, the most types of butterflies were observed at the middle elevation site. In addition, I investigated the direct effects of the climate variables temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, and solar radiation on butterfly activity at three sites. Increased temperature and solar radiation resulted in increased butterfly activity; no relationship between relative humidity or wind and butterfly activity was observed. These abiotic factors are important determinants of butterfly activity, however, the effect of temperature was only observed at 2 of the 3 sites.
