To determine whether floral part numbers (merism) vary over time within inflorescences, we scored merism of the petals, sepals, stamens, and carpels of all flowers on the same 10 plants of Ipomopsis aggregata in three Colorado populations weekly through most of the 1984 flowering season. At least one flower in 93% of the plants had abnormal merism, and 6.1% of the 2,164 flowers scored displayed abnormal merism. Floral inconstancy varied substantially over sites and dates, but not among individual plants. At all three sites, plants showed the most floral variation on the first sampling date. The corolla was the most variable flower part. The temporal changes in floral merism observed may have either developmental or environmental origins.
