Climate change is currently shifting the ranges of plant species, and while climate-based variables trigger migration, sessile plants may reach an expansion limit due to variations in the characteristics of local soils. To better understand the effects of soil on plant performance, we paired 13 years of demographic data on Valeriana edulis with gridded and field-collected soil data, then built vital rate models with these soil covariates to determine their impact on plants across the life cycle. We found that average grain size was highly influential on the survival, flowering, and seed production rates of Valeriana edulis. Water holding capacity and pH had moderate effects on flowering, and nitrogen had no meaningful impact. By analyzing how individual soil characteristics the performance of Valeriana edulis across its life cycle, we can make informed predictions about the eventual fate of the species under new environmental regimes.
