Walter White (1811–1893), a self–educated cabinet–maker's son from Reading, failed to find success in America but after returning to England became one of the century's great walkers and published nine books about his rambles. Entering the service of the Royal Society in 1844 as ‘attendant’ in the Society's library, White was promoted to become the assistant Secretary and Librarian in 1861 and served for over two decades in these key positions, befriending many of England's great writers and scientists.
