Schachter is elementary coordinator for Roaring Fork School District, Glenwood Springs, Colorado. ■ Many students with reading problems seem to be unwilling or unable to vary their reading rates (Gibson and Levin 1975, Karlin 1975, Spache 1976, Golinkoff 1975-1976, Spache and Spache 1977). Obviously, all readers can vary their rates to some extent (when we look up a telephone number, we don't read whole phone book), but many poor readers tend to read the whole thing. Often students approach reading as a task involving attention to and decoding of every word on page (Karlin 1975, Spache 1976, Golinkoff 1975-1976). These students benefit especially from activities that help them develop more flexible reading rates.
